Plantsbrook mastheads

  • I chose to use this font because its an informal font but also bold which stands out on the front of the magazine, which means that this magazine will appeal to both children and adults.
  • I chose to keep the masthead and logo the same colour as the usual Plantsbrook theme colours so it stays simple and it is easy to recognize for anyone who has seen the logo in the past or attends the school. By including loads of colour makes the masthead stand out as it is bright too.
  • I chose to use the words 'Plantsbrook School' because the magazine is for Plantsbrook School which keeps it simple and straight away recognizable for readers to know that all of the information enclosed in the magazine is all about this school.
  • I drew the Plantsbrook logo because you can recognize it straight away if you have seen it before, also it is a main part of the school that is displayed quite a lot around the school and uniform which would stand out.

  • I chose the bold capital font because it stands out and is neat and the masthead is for a school magazine, where neat presentation is promoted. Adults usually write in capital letters which would target them to read and notice this magazine straight away.
  • I chose to write the masthead in all red because this sticks to the schools colour theme, which is effective because not a lot of colours will be used throughout the magazine which makes it look more professional and fun.
  • I decided to use the words 'Plantsbrook News' because its simple and tells the reader straight away that this magazine is all about school and news that's useful and the readers are interested in.
  • My decision to draw the Plantsbrook logo was because the local community and students that attend the school will recognize this and know that the magazine is aimed at anyone who attends or is interested in Plantsbrook, it would also break up all the writing and include an image which makes the masthead more interesting.

  • I chose this font because it looks like handwriting and this masthead is for a school magazine. The writing also looks quite informal which may also interest children who the magazine is partly aimed at.
  • The masthead is red because this suits the school theme colours, as the Plantsbrook logo and theme colours are red and black. I thought by sticking to the black and red theme colours will make the masthead stand out and be recognizable to people who know Plantsbrook.
  • I used the words 'Plantsbrook News' because this masthead is for a Plantsbrook magazine which relates it to the magazine and all of the readers will know straight away that the magazine is all about what's going on about Plantsbrook and all about the school.
  • I included the Plantsbrook logo because it is recognizable on the front of the magazine and will catch the readers eye if the reader recognizes that the logo belongs to a school.

School magazine analysis

Here is a piece of work that I completed to analyse a magazine front cover, this has made me understand what should be included on a magazine front cover and identify the different aspects included, such as the masthead/anchorage text/cover lines and main images.

Analysing music magazine covers

All music magazine covers share similar conventions even when they come from different genres or brands of magazines. Some of the similar conventions that I found are:

Bold titles/writing: the bold writing and titles make the magazine covers stand out and look appealing to the readers. I found that the bold writing was mainly key words and interesting story lines that any reader would look at first and it would instantly help them to decide whether they want to read the magazine or not, due to whether they're interested.

Bright colors: The bright colors make the front cover unique and give an idea of who would be reading the magazine, for example the Pink Katy Perry magazine straight away looks like a magazine that would stand out to girls and is quite friendly and feminine.

Main image: All of the magazine covers have one main image, a lot of the magazine covers I have chose have girls looking into the camera and are fully clothed or revealing a bit of skin which shows femininity and could be for either male or female readers; as for the magazines with male images on.

Coverlines: Each magazine has a cover line, whether its a long one or a short one. Each cover line shows the audience what kind of stories the magazines cover, this also gives an idea of what type of people would want to buy the magazine. The cover lines are mainly presented in a bold way so key words stand out and jump out at the reader.

The use of celebrities: All of the magazine covers have a main image of a celebrity which catches the eyes of the public straight away if they see a celebrity that they like, this then straight away encourages the reader to buy the magazine. Not only this but the celebrity makes the cover of the magazine look more attractive and modern.

Anchorage text: All of the magazine covers include bold anchorage text which highlights the celebrities name or the key words which are describing the theme of the magazine. The bold writing makes the important information stand out; also the writer knows that they should make the writing bold to catch the readers eye.

Reflecting on my coursework

When looking through all of the links, I chose a one from each subheading to look at, here are what I thought of a handful of the websites...

Remember the milk:
I think that this site us very useful and good to help you organise tasks which I think we will be doing a lot of in Media. I like this website because I found it quite easy to use considering I've never come across it before. I think there is a possibility I will use this organisation tool when completing my coursework if it is needed.

Podomatic:
My computer at home isn't compatible with this website but when I briefly looked at it at school, I found that creating a podcast and listening to them was quite straight forward, however I think that the website could be easier to work out. I think testing out other audio tools would be useful as I think that I should use a tool that I will be able to use on my computer just in case work has to be completed outside of the classroom.

Tubechop:
I think Tubechop is a really good website to trim videos simply, it gives clear instructions and samples of how to use the website. However I don't think the website would be useful if the clips/videos weren't off youtube or videos with links to them, as you need to use links to find the videos to be able to clip/trim them. I would like to think I could use this website in my coursework.

Photobucket:
Photobucket is a really good way to store your photos and also a good way to save storage space; this also allows you to have easy access to your photos online. This website is also a good way to share and view other peoples photos. Not only this, but I like the way you can transfer files from computer to computer, from work or school; this will be very useful and reliable in my opinion!

SlideShare:
I have never used SlideShare before and I think that the website is one of my favourites because you don't just use power points in media, you use them in most lessons. I've found this quite useful as it will help me out in all of my subjects now. I'm really happy I have now found this website because I would definitely like to use this website whenever I can and it is relevant. I like the way you can see other peoples and featured slide shows for presentation ideas and motivation. I think this way of creating power points looks really effective and fun.

Quizlet:
I have recently used Quizlet in Year 11 and found that I did actually learn a lot from quizzing myself. I also found it useful and found that I used the website more than I imagined myself to as it is easy access and fun to use. The different activities are fun and motivate you to revise. I will definitely be using this revision tool when I can and use this website to plan my work with the mind map/brainstorm tools.

I continued to look at all of the other categories full of useful websites and found that I wouldn't mind using these tools in my coursework wherever I can. I think my reviewing the class work and looking through these websites have given me an idea of what tools I like and which ones I dislike, so this then gives me an idea of which ones I would like to use in the future. I have found this task very useful!
